What Does a Geriatric Medical Assistant Do?

A Medical Assistant specializing in geriatric care works with elderly patients (typically aged 65 and older), focusing on their specific healthcare needs and complex medical conditions. They assist with daily routines, administer medications, take vital signs, and educate patients and their families about managing chronic conditions. Geriatric Medical Assistants may work in various settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement communities.

  5. Demonstrate clinical care skills related to patient preparation, measurement of vital signs, assisting the physician and performance of specimen collection and testing as ordered by the physician
  6. Recognize proper infection control procedures, handwashing and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) per Standard and Universal precautions
  7. Discuss patient scheduling and related tasks for provider appointments, diagnostic testing, and procedures

As such, Introduction to Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology is included as a foundation.

Today’s Medical Assistant will be called upon to perform a variety of clinical and administrative duties, so the MedCerts’ program covers a wide range of skills and objectives that expand beyond traditional job roles. The Clinical Medical Assisting course primarily focuses on the clinical aspects of medical assisting, such as pharmacology, vital signs testing, medication administration, and diagnostic testing. The Medical Office Procedures and Administration course covers front-office skills related to office operations, records management, coding and insurance basics and other administrative tasks. For today’s job-ready Medical Assistants, it’s critical that candidates are trained and knowledgeable in front office, back office, and clinical skills.

The Geriatrics for the Healthcare Professional course provides specialized training backed by the latest evidence-based practices to provide high-quality care for older adults. This training encourages adherence to best practices in geriatric care and fosters a culture of empathy and understanding. It empowers the Geriatric Medical Assistant with the ability to address the physical, psychological, and social needs of older adult patients, navigate complex family dynamics, and provide holistic care.

Upon completion, graduates are eligible for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exams, issued by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Med Certs covers the cost of all exams.
